The
word is the name of one of the Japanese inventors of these directional
antennas. The other inventor's name was Uda so in technical
circles these are Uda-Yagi antennas in honor of the inventor
team. The invention is from the early 1900s.
While there is a multitude of directional antenna designs in
use today, the Yagi is the most popular, well known and most
seen. Some people call these "beam" antennas, namely CBers and
Amateur Radio Operators and cellular.
Note: the rooftop TV antennas seen all over the US are a cousin of the Yagi design but are called Log-Periodic because they are quite different in serving a huge number or width of frequencies.
How Do These Antennas Achieve So Much "Gain"?
The antenna needs to be mounted as high and in the clear as possible. But there is a point at which increasing height to gain 1dB can cause an extra 3dB in cable losses. So good thinking must be utilized when deciding when more height is needed and how much longer the cable will be. On the other hand, if excess cable length is present, either remove it or run a long path to the antenna, never coil or fold up the cable.

These, like most antennas, are made of
aluminum, a great conductor of electric power besides radio
frequency energy. You can be instantly killed if the antenna
or support structure being worked with touches an electric power
line. Never even think of installing an antenna during rain
or wet conditions.
Finally, don't stand less than 5 feet in front of the transmitting
antenna when using a regular 3 watt phone. Don't install the
antenna where the signal has to cross where people will be walking
in front of or touch your antenna. While radiation dangers at
low power are not proven, don't take chances with RF emissions.

Our 20.5 dBi panel antenna

17 dBi Yagi antenna
Size
Flat design, small size
Very long boom. In some apartment buildings and condo it is not allowed to install yagi antennas.
Winter conditions
Resistant to ice build up. If covered by snow/ice does not loose signal as much.
Gets easily de-tuned on the ice build up, causing signal loss. Not resistant to snow.
Winds
Due to its smaller size, resistant to winds. Because of less wind payload, it less vibrates.
Due to long pole, not as strong as panel antenna. High winds will cause vibration, resulting in unstable reception.
Birds issue
Landed bird does not cover antenna vibrators area. No signal loss.
Attractive
to birds ! See what happens to the signal and aiming once bird landed
on the yagi's boom. Gets de-tuned by bird, causing signal loss.
Obstruction of view
Our 20.5 dBi antenna has 16 active elements
creating large signal collection area. If obstruction changes occur
nearby like tree leaves or branches there will be less signal strength
changes.
Yagi has only 1 active element
in the last director. Others, are passive directors. This is very tiny
signal capture area. Yagi's require an obstruction clear running start
in the signal direction of at least 1000 feet. Any obstruction may cause signal loss.
Placement and aiming
Easy placement in a limited size areas. Easier aiming due to large signal collection area.
Placement
could be a pain at certain locations. Due to a very narrow bandwidth,
placement and aiming requires more time and patience. Errors in
installation will cause unstable reception.
Using indoors
Our antenna is easiest to install indoors.
Simply mount it inside on any window towards distant access point by
using 4 squares of adhesive Velcro. You are done in under 1 minute !
Please note: glass reduces Wifi signal by 30%.
Can you imagine 3 feet long monster in your house ? Comparable gain yagi is not suited for indoors !
HIGH dBi
Our antenna's gain 20.5 dBi. Compare it to 17dBi yagi and remember every 3 dBi doubles the signal. Our antenna it twice powerful that any yagi !
We have not seen practical yagi antenna construction with gains exceeding 17dBi. Twice less powerful than our panel antenna.

Information about radio cable length: 0.5M (1.6 feet) of cable is included with the Antenna. We strongly recommend not to extend it as signal loss is exponentially increasing with every foot of cable. If you need to mount Antenna outdoors you need to make a box for Router to seal it from weather conditions (rain / snow). |
